Manila, Philippines – A 48-YEAR-OLD police officer was arrested on Tuesday night, February 6, after he shot dead a trisikad driver who allegedly courted his 83-year-old mother in Barangay Looc, Dumanjug town, Cebu.
Senior Inspector Gilfred Baroman, the town police chief, identified the suspect as Police Officer 2 Ruelito Tano, who is assigned in Provincial Mobile Force Company’s detachment in Barangay Lutopan, Toledo City.
The fatality, Fabian Libaton, 64, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
Libaton hailed from Barangay Kanyuko, Dumanjug.
“Kining biktima moadto magabii sa balay sa inahan sa suspek, namisita ba, nanguyab, (The victim usually visits the suspect’s mother every night to court her,)” said Baroman.
Before Tano shot Libaton, the police officer rode on the victim’s trisikad. Tano confronted Libaton when they were near Looc’s barangay hall.
“Gisultian daw niya ngano man ‘sige man kag adto sa amoa, nahasi na man akong inahan’ mao na to nasuko pod ning biktima ‘wala man ko moadto,'” Baroman said. Tano and Libaton then argued.
The police officer later disembarked from the trisikad.
When he turned around, Tano claimed he saw Libaton carrying a gun. Tano then shot Libaton, who was hit in chest and thigh died.
Police caught Tano, who yielded his .9mm service pistol and an unlicensed .357 revolver allegedly owned by the victim.
A murder complaint will be filed against the suspect before the provincial prosecutor’s office.
