Manila, Philippines – To beat the sweltering weather and celebrate Easter Sunday, hundreds of people went to Manila Bay to take a dip in the polluted water.
However, policemen and members of the Philippine Coast Guard prevented them from swimming.
Superintendent Amante Daro, commander of Manila Police District’s Station 9, said the Manila City government’s Ordinance 3825 prohibits people from swimming in Manila Bay.
Daro said at least 1,000 people have been shooed away by the PCG and his men as of Sunday morning.
The Department of Health had also warned that people swimming in the Manila Bay may get skin diseases, typhoid, Hepatitis A, cholera and severe diarrhea.
Aside from domestic garbage, Manila Bay is also polluted with human feces.
