Manila, Philippines – At least 19 people died while 21 others were hurt when a passenger bus hit a bridge railing and fell into a 15-meter deep cliff in Sablayan town, Occidental Mindoro province, on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday morning.
Senior Supt. Romie Estepa, Occidental Mindoro police director, said the Dimple Star Bus was traveling along the national highway in Barangay (village) Batong Buhay at 9 p.m. when its driver hit a portion of Patrik Bridge and lost control of the vehicle.
Initial reports said the 15 passengers died instantly from the crash in Sitio (subvillage) Yapang while the injured were taken to hospitals in Sablayan and Mamburao towns.
Estepa said among the fatalities were the driver and the conductor.
The bus came from San Jose town and was on its way to Metro Manila when the accident happened, reports said.
